Why You Should Choose a Beeswax Candle
So we know that beeswax candles have zero nasty chemicals in them and naturally last much longer than regular candles.
In this section, we’ll take a more in-depth look at why they are such a great choice and how to choose one.
What to Look for in a Beeswax Candle
Did you know that a candle only needs to contain as little as 51% of beeswax to be labeled a “beeswax candle”?
So if you want a beeswax candle, it’s really important to read the ingredient list carefully to make sure it does actually contain 100% pure beeswax.
That said, beeswax blends really well with other natural vegetable-based waxes.
But do be wary of candles that say “blend” on the label. More often than not they won’t state what the blend is. In which case it’s likely to be cheap paraffin wax – and who knows what other chemicals and cheap fragrances are in there.
Give them a miss, and go for a 100% pure beeswax candle, or one that’s blended only with other natural waxes. And if you want a scented beeswax candle, choose one that’s made with essential oils.
What Exactly Are Beeswax Candles?
Beeswax is basically what bees make the comb out of, you know, the place where they store their honey and protect their young.
When the comb is full of honey, bees cap the comb with more wax.
So beeswax is a really useful by-product of honey making.
These wax caps can be scraped off and collected. And the combs themselves can be harvested when the bees no longer need them.
Once the honey has been drained, the comb can be used for polishes, etc. While the purer, cleaner wax caps, are washed, melted, and cut into blocks ready to make into candles.
No chemicals, modern technology, or factory processing necessary. You could make a beeswax candle at home from scratch. They are about as natural as you can get and have been around for thousands of years.
What do Beeswax Smell Like?
Because beeswax candles are 100% natural they all vary in strength, in fact, even different batches from the same candlemaker vary between having a very subtle aroma to a more noticeable sweet honey smell.
Generally speaking, however, unscented, beeswax candles have very little smell to a subtle, sweet aromatic honey smell. These more honey-scented ones are usually the result of only lightly filtering the wax after harvesting.
Beeswax also blends very well with other scents. In fact, when blended with fragrances from natural sources and essential oils, the natural scent of beeswax only enhances the candle’s overall scent throw.
And the bonus is, you get all the benefits of a much cleaner, healthier burn, than you’d get with a regular paraffin wax candle.
Do Beeswax Candles Purify the Air? No!
You may have heard that they emit negative ions or, more negative ions than other candles and that they somehow magically purify the air.
The theory goes like this:
- Negative ions attract dust and particles which clump together and fall to the ground due to their accumulated weight so they are not hanging around for you to breathe in.
A good air purifier will do that for you, that’s precisely how they work.
But a candle just isn’t gonna do it. They do emit negative ions, as all candles do. But there really isn’t any scientific evidence to support this as a health benefit of beeswax or any other candles for that matter.
They are just candles. They’re made from natural stuff and are way better than air fresheners, which, (don’t get me started) contain VOCs and other nasty stuff.
Provided you’re not in an unventilated room with anything that burns for a long period of time, they’re safe, relaxing to be around, and pretty whether lit or not.
And who doesn’t love the warm glow of candlelight?
So, putting all of this together, let’s look at our recommendations for the best beeswax candless out there right now.

Root have been around since 1869 when founder and expert beekeeper Amos Ives Root first opened his business in Medina, Ohio. Root candles are still made in the US, on the same plot of land Amos Ives Root bought over 100 years ago, so there is quite a bit of history attached to the name.
